Aquamarine Starflower

Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in its leaves)

This small flower grows up to 5 inches (13 cm) tall. Its emerald stem is thick, and the small, emerald leaves are stiff, pointed with smooth edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves grow in pairs along the length of the stem.

3 to 9 tiny flowers grow on alternate sides up the length of the stem. The flowers are 1 cm (0.4 inches) wide, with orange petals that gradient shift to aquamarine on the outer edge. The central disk is turquoise. The flower head is made up of handfuls of petals; the lower layer of petals are flat, while the upper layers form a tight star. They detach easily.

It has a delicate scent that smells like citrus, and it has lots of pollen; it can cause severe allergic reactions. It is a self-pollinator, but is also visited by one species of insect in particular.

It is suitable for making baskets and the like
