Indigo Dishflower

Flower type: Biennial (Grows upwards by clinging to almost any surface.)

This average-sized flower grows up to 1.7 feet (51 cm) tall. Its yellow-green stem is thin and splits into 5 branching stems at the top, and the miniature, lime green leaves are grey on the underside and are circular with toothed edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves grow in pairs along the length of the stem.

Each stem splits 4 to 9 times; a single tiny flower grows at the end of each split. The flowers are 3 cm (1.2 inches) wide, with solid indigo petals decorated with lilac lines and a purple central disk. The flower head is shaped like a dish with 17 widely spaced, round-tipped petals. They fall easily.

It has a strong scent that smells like coffee, and it has lots of pollen,but it does not cause many allergic reactions. It is a self-pollinator.

The entire plant is edible and the grains areextremely spicy.
