Caramel

This short fruit tree grows up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall and lives for up to 30 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 54 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a thick, wavy trunk covered in delicate, silky, brown-green speckled bark, and inside, the very dense wood is pine-coloured.

The tangled mess of branches are short and thick and are covered with sparse amounts of small, long, tapering leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are caramel with deep yellow tips.

In early spring, it produces hundreds of medium-sized, vivid purple blossoms with asymmetrical petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They are hardy and have a weak scent that smells like new books.

In late summer it produces large, pleated fruit. The rubbery turquoise skin is tough and edible when roasted; it is savoury, and the very soft cyan flesh is spicy and oily. The brown seed is very large and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots grow as a near perfect mirror of the tree above, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with grassy ground between them.
