It is steady-growing, taking 9 months to reach maturity. Once mature, several flowers with petals that are either sky blue or dark brown, with a yellow center grow at the top, reappearing once every 10 years. The flower head is largely flat with 33 tightly layered narrow petals. It has a delicate scent that smells like marzipan.
The cactus's skin is extremely thick, the indigo flesh is rough, and the faded purple sap is thin.
