Magenta Starflower

Flower type: Annual (Stores water in its leaves)

This short flower grows up to 1 inch (3 cm) tall. Its pink-red stem is wispy, and the tiny, orange-yellow leaves are sickle shaped with smooth edges. Many leaves grow along the entire length of the stem.

Dozens of medium-sized flowers grow in a bunch at the end of the stem. The flowers are 4 cm (1.6 inches) wide, with petals that are dark grey at the sides and magenta at the center. The flower head is shaped like a star with 47 tightly layered, round-tipped petals. They are very delicate.

It has a scent that varies in strength that smells like vomit, and it has a fair amount of pollen; it can cause severe allergic reactions. It is a self-pollinator.

It out-competes most other plants for nutrients and light.
