This burgundy moss is commonly found blanketing giant areas In damp forests, In marshes, and In rainy mountain ranges.
It is colossal, growing up to 1.6 feet (48 cm) tall. It forms in sparse patches, and is extremely hardy.
When mature, emerald oblong capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early winter to release dozens of spores; it can cause allergic reactions.

The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
It is possible to grow it from cuttings.
It is suitable for making strong rope
