Blackfruit Tree

Fruit Tree type: Coniferous (Stores water in its leaves)

This big fruit tree grows up to 37 feet (11.3 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 38 years old. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a very thick, crooked trunk covered in cracked, pine-coloured bark, and inside, the very dense wood is dark brown.

The sparse amount of branches are short stubs and are covered with large amounts of giant, sickle shaped leaves with irregular edges. The leaves themselves are found in black, cream and white varieties.

In early spring, it produces thousands of small, bronze blossoms with circular petals with a tube-like floral cup. They fall easily and have a delicate scent that smells like mint.

In early summer it produces small, cuboid fruit. The clammy grey skin is stretchy and inedible, and the very soft hazel flesh is salty and dry. The red seeds are large and are dotted around on the skin of the fruit.

The roots are fine and grow in a large web, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with clear space between them.
