Climbing Hazelberry

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Grows upwards by clinging to almost any surface.)

This modest-sized fruit tree grows up to 17 feet (5.2 meters) tall and lives for up to 20 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 38 years old. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has a slender, slanted trunk covered in ridged, black with white speckled bark, and inside, the dense wood is pale brown-grey.

The sparse patches of branches are short, thin and wispy and are covered with sparse amounts of small, long, tapering leaves with tattered edges. The leaves themselves are either caramel, or hazel with yellow patches.

In early spring, it produces several small, washed-out yellow blossoms with asymmetrical petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are hardy and have a mildly strong scent that smells like rich perfume.

In mid-summer it produces , fan-like fruit. The sticky grey skin is delicate and inedible, and the crunchy hazel flesh is savoury and syrupy. The beige seeds are small and are scattered throughout the fruit.

The roots are shallow and grow straight down, and overall the tree is rigid and weak, and breaks apart easily.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with patches of undergrowth between them.

It coexists peacefully with other plants.
