Burgundy Willow

Shrub type: Deciduous (Grows along the ground or other low surfaces.)

This average-sized shrub grows up to 3 feet (91.4 cm) tall and lives for decades, with the oldest known specimen being around 189 years old. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has many knobbly, twisting stems covered in hard, rough, burgundy bark, and the wood inside is white with black speckles.

The branches are very short and thin with hundreds of twigs that and are covered with handfuls of miniature, long, narrow, leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are either florescent yellow, or black with cyan dots, flimsy and clammy.

In late spring it produces many giant, light grey blossoms with asymmetrical petals with a tube-like floral cup. They are hardy and have a mildly strong scent that smells like rotten eggs.

In late autumn small needle-like fruits ripen. The fuzzy peach skin is tough and edible when cooked; it is bitter and sour, and the very soft black flesh is savoury and powdery. The lime seeds are large and are dotted around on the skin of the fruit.
