This brown moss is commonly found growing in tiny clumps On rotten logs.
It is massive, growing up to 1.2 feet (36 cm) tall. It forms in large clumps and they overwhelm an area rapidly, and is very rigid; it dislikes being stepped on.
When mature, emerald cylindrical capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early summer to release dozens of spores.

It makes a distinctive sound when the wind blows through it.
It usually houses a colony of beneficial insects.
It is suitable for making paper
