This red moss is commonly found blanketing large areas In heathlands.
It is short, growing up to 3 inches (8 cm) tall. It forms in thick clumps and they are exceptionally hardy, and is overwhelmingly rigid.
When mature, emerald cylindrical capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the late autumn to release thousands of spores; it does not cause many allergic reactions.

It is difficult to kill and will quickly regrow if it falls or if its limbs are knocked off.
