Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This short fruit tree grows up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) tall and lives for up to 20 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 38 years old. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a thick, angular trunk covered in thick, knobbly, mahogany-coloured bark, and inside, the medium-dense wood is pine-coloured.

The branches are short and slender and are covered with thick bunches of large, very thick leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are either indigo or pink, with dark red edges.

In early spring, it produces thousands of large, sky blue blossoms with wide petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are hardy and have a delicate scent that smells like burning wood.

In early autumn it produces small, needle-like fruit. The sticky lilac skin is tough and inedible, and the soft crimson flesh is spicy and salty and oily. The blood red seeds are small and are located in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and widely spread, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with grassy ground between them.

It can absorb up to 18 times its own weight in water.
