Burgundy Spikeflower

Flower type: Perennial (Grows along the ground or other low surfaces.)

This average-sized flower grows up to 2.0 feet (61 cm) tall. Its yellow-green stem is very thin, and the miniature, burgundy leaves are asymmetrical with smooth edges. The leaves alternate on the stem.

Two small flowers sit at the end of the stem. The flowers are 11 cm (4.3 inches) wide, with petals that are dark grey at the sides and blood red at the center. The flower head is made up of several petals; the lower layer of petals are flat, while the upper layers form a tight dish. They are hardy.

It has a powerful scent that smells like alcohol, and it has very little pollen; it does not cause any allergic reactions. It is pollinated by the wind.

The stems are covered in large spikes.
