Coconut Lily

Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This big flower grows up to 5.6 feet (1.7 meters) tall. Its silver stem is wispy and splits into 7 branching stems a quarter of the way up, and the miniature, pink or green leaves are very narrow and elongated with rounded edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and a pair of leaves grow at the base of the flower head.

2 to 5 small flowers grow on alternate sides up the length of the stem. The flowers are 45 cm (17.7 inches) wide, with petals that are white on the underside and olive on the top. The flower head is made up of several petals; the lower layer of petals are flat, while the upper layers form a tight bowl. They are very delicate.

It has an overpowering scent that smells like coconut, and it has an average amount of pollen; it can cause severe allergic reactions. It is a self-pollinator, but is also visited by a variety of insects.
