This burgundy moss is commonly found growing in medium-sized clumps In bogs, and On trees.
It is average-sized, growing up to 4 inches (10 cm) tall. It forms in extensive patches and they spread and grow quickly, and is extremely robust.
When mature, emerald shield-shaped capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early autumn to release thousands of spores.
