Carmine Spikefern

Succulent type: Leaf succulent (Stores water in its leaves)

This small leaf succulent grows up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall. The spear shaped stem is orange-yellow and moss green, and is covered in brittle drab yellow spines. The smooth-edged, 3 pointed leaves are bright red and green. Small amounts of them grow from the base in alternating layers of 2, then 4, then 6, and so on. The leaves are frail, and do not detach easily.

It is quick growing, taking 3 months to reach maturity. Once mature, a single flower with caramel petals and a dull orange central disk grows at the top, reappearing every year. The flower head is made up of 5 petals in raised layers. It has an intense scent that smells like paint.

The leaf succulent's skin is rock-hard, the azure flesh is rubbery, and the magenta sap is thin.

It is very rare outside of a particular area.
It can survive a long time without water.
It is suitable for making baskets and the like
