Bluestem Tree

This small fruit tree grows up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 28 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a flexible, angular trunk covered in wrinkled, brown and grey bark, and inside, the very dense wood is yellow.

The tangled mess of branches are very short and thin and are covered with very large amounts of huge, oblong leaves with jagged edges. The leaves themselves are either sky blue, or brown with black edges.

In early spring, it produces many balls of medium-sized, blue blossoms with sickle shaped petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are sturdy and have a mildly strong scent that smells like new books.

In early summer it produces small, spherical fruit. The crispy green skin is tough and inedible, and the slightly crunchy brown flesh is bitter and spicy and sticky. The yellow seeds are large and are located in the centre of the fruit.

The roots form a tightly packed ball, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with the space between filled with undergrowth.
