Bloodfruit Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its stem)

This modest-sized fruit tree grows up to 14 feet (4.3 meters) tall and lives for up to 20 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 64 years old. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has a sturdy, straight trunk covered in delicate, smooth, yellow bark, and inside, the very dense wood is black with white speckles.

The numerous branches are long and thick and are covered with small amounts of large, slender, pointed leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are either blue, or subtle green with cyan lines.

In early spring, it produces hundreds of small, bronze blossoms with wide petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are very delicate and have an overpowering scent that smells like blood.

In mid-summer it produces very large, asymmetrical fruit. The clammy pastel blue skin is stretchy and sweet and spicy, and the crunchy subtle green flesh is sweet and sticky. The crimson seed is large and sits at the end of the fruit.

The roots grow as a near perfect mirror of the tree above, and overall the tree is rigid and weak, and breaks apart easily.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with patches of undergrowth between them.

The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
It can survive a very long time without water.
It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
