Amaranthine Hazel

This short fruit tree grows up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 38 years old. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a sturdy, straight trunk covered in delicate, cracked, dark brown bark, and inside, the hard wood is gray.

The small handful of branches trail down to the ground and are covered with copious amounts of giant, needle-like leaves with wavy edges. The leaves themselves are hazel with blood red tips.

In early spring, it produces copious amounts of tiny, white blossoms with pleated petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are hardy and have a mildly strong scent that smells like cotton.

In early winter it produces , fan-like fruit. The clammy caramel skin is tough and inedible, and the crunchy hazel flesh is sweet and sticky. The yellow seed is large and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and grow straight down, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with grassy ground between them.
