Bloodberry

This modest-sized shrub grows up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall and lives for decades, with the oldest known specimen being around 100 years old. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has numerous slender, crooked stems covered in thin, cracked, mahogany-coloured bark, and the wood inside is burgundy.

The branches trail down across the ground with hundreds of twigs that and are covered with small bunches of tiny, wide, leaves with irregular edges. The leaves themselves are blood red and orange, robust and smooth.

In mid-summer it produces thick bunches of giant, sky blue blossoms with needle-like petals. They detach easily and have an intense scent that smells like baby powder.

In late winter slender, 3 pointed fruits ripen. The hairy florescent purple skin is tough and inedible, and the very soft brown flesh is bitter and juicy. The drab yellow seeds are small and are scattered throughout the fruit.
