Bluefruit Tree

This small fruit tree grows up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall and lives for up to 15 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 30 years old. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has a very thick, slanted trunk covered in hard, wrinkled, brown and grey bark, and inside, the very dense wood is mahogany-coloured.

The extensive patches of branches trail down towards the ground and are covered with handfuls of miniature, sickle shaped leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are either intense red, or blue with gold lines.

In early spring, it produces many clusters of small, beige blossoms with asymmetrical petals. They are sturdy and have a strong scent that smells like bonfire smoke.

In mid-summer it produces , broad, flat fruit. The smooth turquoise skin is thin and edible when roasted; it is overwhelmingly spicy, and the crunchy blue flesh is bitter and syrupy. The light red seed is tiny and sits at the end of the fruit.

The roots grow as a near perfect mirror of the tree above, and overall the tree is rigid and weak, and breaks apart easily.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with patches of undergrowth between them.
