This average-sized shrub grows up to 3 feet (91.4 cm) tall and lives for around 13 years. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has numerous flexible, crooked stems covered in wrinkled, brown-green speckled bark, and the wood inside is burgundy-brown.

The branches trail down across the ground with hundreds of twigs that and are covered with copious amounts of giant, long, tapering, leaves with ripped edges. The leaves themselves are found in white and amber varieties, delicate and smooth.

In early summer it produces lots of small, copper blossoms with finger-like petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They detach easily and have a fairly strong scent that smells like a newborn baby.

In midwinter tiny finger-like fruits ripen. The smooth violet skin is stretchy and inedible, and the soft blue flesh is sour and dry. The lime seed is large and sits at the end of the fruit.
