Desert Flame Lily

Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in its leaves)

This colossal flower grows up to 12.1 feet (3.7 meters) tall. Its orange stem is very thin, and the miniature, gray-green leaves are kidney-shaped with wavy edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and a pair of leaves grow at the base of the flower head.

A single tiny flower sits at the end of the stem. The flowers are 38 cm (15.0 inches) wide, with crimson petals on the lower layer and cyan petals decorated with amber dots on the inner layer. The central disk is yellow. The flower head is made up of handfuls of petals in raised layers. They are hardy.

It has a strong scent that smells like rich perfume, and it has very little pollen, but can cause severe allergic reactions. It is pollinated by a small species of bird, but is enjoyed by several specific types of insect.


Once on fire, it burns very quickly.
