Crimson Heartvine

Flower type: Annual (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This modest-sized flower grows up to 1.5 feet (46 cm) tall. Its pink-red stem is thick, and the tiny, lime green leaves are very thin with tattered edges. A pair of leaves grow at the base of the stem.

Each stem splits 1 to 5 times; a single tiny flower grows at the end of each split. The flowers are 21 cm (8.3 inches) wide, with petals that are crimson on the edges and silver at the center. The flower head is shaped like a heart made up of dozens of widely spaced, round-tipped petals. They detach easily.

It has a weak scent that smells like blood, and it has very little pollen. It is pollinated by a small species of bird.

It is suitable for making paper
