This copper moss is commonly found blanketing tiny areas In heathlands.
It is short, growing up to 1 inch (3 cm) tall. It forms in extensive patches, and is overwhelmingly flimsy; it takes a lot of damage when trodden on.
When mature, emerald oblong capsules grow at the end of elongated, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early autumn to release millions of spores; it does not cause many allergic reactions.

The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
It is suitable for making baskets and the like
