It takes 2 months for the green stems to mature, by which point they each have a diameter of 1 cm (0.4 inches) and are hard and brittle.
The very narrow and elongated, fuzzy leaves reach up to 5 inches (13 cm) in length. They are black at the bottom and blood red with brown edges at the top, and have tattered edges.
During late spring, the bine produces a handful of colossal dark grey flowers.
It makes a distinctive sound when the wind blows through it.
