This gray moss is commonly found blanketing tiny areas On trees.
It is small, growing up to 1 inch (3 cm) tall. It forms in thin clumps and they are exceptionally hardy, and is very rigid.
When mature, emerald kidney-shaped capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the mid-summer to release millions of spores; it can cause severe allergic reactions.

The bark is frequently covered in moss.
It is suitable for creating flexible, durable textiles
It commonly grows in large patches.
