This copper moss is commonly found blanketing medium-sized areas On trees, On rotten logs, and In rainy mountain ranges.
It is modest-sized, growing up to 5 inches (13 cm) tall. It forms in large clumps and they spread and grow quickly, and is extremely resistant.
When mature, emerald shield-shaped capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the late summer to release thousands of spores; it can cause allergic reactions.

It makes a distinctive sound when the wind blows through it.
