Crimson Sagebrush

Shrub type: Deciduous (Stores water in its stem)

This short shrub grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall and lives for around 19 years. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has several knobbly, straight stems covered in delicate, knobbly, dark gray bark, and the wood inside is burgundy-brown.

The branches are short, thin and wispy with hundreds of twigs that and are covered with thick bunches of huge, slender, pointed, leaves with jagged edges. The leaves themselves are found in red, crimson and yellow varieties, resilient and covered in fine hairs.

It produces a thick sheet of small, brown flowers with wide petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They detach easily and have a delicate scent that smells like marzipan. In late winter it forms tinyvivid orange seed pods.

All of it is said to be part of one single, massive plant.
