Burgundy Berry Tree

This huge fruit tree grows up to 53 feet (16.2 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 40 years old. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has a narrow, straight trunk covered in fine, smooth, burgundy bark, and inside, the light wood is burgundy.

The branches trail down to the ground and are covered with sparse amounts of large, asymmetrical leaves with serrated edges. The leaves themselves are dark brown with lime tips.

In early spring, it produces many bunches of tiny, yellow blossoms with slender, pointed petals. They are hardy and have a mildly strong scent that smells like blood.

In mid-autumn it produces small, broad, flat fruit. The leathery black skin is stretchy and edible when cooked; it is sour, and the slightly crunchy hazel flesh is spicy and very dry. The red seeds are large and are scattered throughout the fruit.

The roots are fine and grow in a large web, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with the space between filled with undergrowth.
