Copperberry

This modest-sized fruit tree grows up to 11 feet (3.4 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 44 years old. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has a narrow, straight trunk covered in hard, smooth, mahogany-coloured bark, and inside, the very dense wood is gray.

The branches trail down towards the ground and are covered with very large amounts of small, long, tapering leaves with serrated edges. The leaves themselves are copper with peach tips.

In early spring, it produces thousands of tiny, violet blossoms with flame-shaped shaped petals. They are sturdy and have a delicate scent that smells like mango.

In late summer it produces tiny, 4 pointed fruit. The rough hazel skin is thick and edible when roasted; it is bitter and salty, and the soft olive flesh is very sweet and juicy. The beige seed is very large and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots spread far and go deep underground, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with clear space between them.
