Bloodthorn

Shrub type: Deciduous (Stores water in its stem)

This short shrub grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall and lives for around 40 years. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has dozens of slender, crooked stems covered in thin, ridged, brown bark, and the wood inside is yellow-brown.

The branches trail down across the ground with hundreds of twigs that and are covered with sparse amounts of giant, long, narrow, leaves with toothed edges. The leaves themselves are either lilac, or blood red with copper zig-zags, delicate and waxy.

In early summer it produces copious amounts of tiny, black blossoms with many layers of petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are very delicate and have a delicate scent that smells like rotten meat.

In late winter tiny stiff, pointed fruits ripen. The crispy light yellow skin is thin and edible when boiled; it is sweet, and the crunchy blood red flesh is salty and syrupy. The florescent red seeds are tiny and are bunched at the top of the fruit.

It is difficult to kill and will quickly regrow if cut.
