Copperberry

This modest-sized fruit tree grows up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) tall and lives for up to 20 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 39 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has a wide, straight trunk covered in ridged, copper-coloured bark, and inside, the medium-dense wood is pale yellow.

The tangled mess of branches trail down towards the ground and are covered with large amounts of huge, needle-like leaves with jagged edges. The leaves themselves are found in brown, blood red and orange varieties.

In early spring, it produces a thick sheet of tiny, lilac blossoms with slender, pointed petals with a tube-like floral cup. They detach easily and have a scent that varies in strength that smells like faeces.

In mid-autumn it produces , 7 pointed fruit. The rough red skin is peel-able and bitter and salty, and the very soft vibrant green flesh is spicy and savoury and sticky. The hazel seeds are large and are dotted around on the skin of the fruit.

The roots spread far and go deep underground, and overall the tree is sturdy, flexible, and difficult to uproot or break.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with clear space between them.
