This copper moss is commonly found growing in small clumps In heathlands, In rainy mountain ranges, and In damp forests.
It is large, growing up to 10 inches (25 cm) tall. It forms in small clumps and they overwhelm an area rapidly, and is extremely frail.
When mature, emerald oval-shaped capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the late summer to release millions of spores; it does not cause many allergic reactions.

It can flourish even in standing water.

It is said to be able to live for hundreds of years.
