Copperfern

Shrub type: Coniferous (Stores water in its leaves)

This short shrub grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall and lives for around 56 years. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has numerous stocky, straight stems covered in thin, rough, brown bark, and the wood inside is copper-coloured.

The branches are tall, rigid and upright that and are covered with handfuls of miniature, needle-like, leaves with irregular edges. The leaves themselves are gold and blood red, frail and leathery.

In early summer it produces dozens of medium-sized, red flowers with pleated petals. They are sturdy and have a faint scent that smells like rainy days.


Their seeds have hallucinogenic properties.
The grass is sour and slightly toxic and while grains are sweet and non-toxic.
It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
