Caramelberry

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This average-sized fruit tree grows up to 15 feet (4.6 meters) tall and lives for up to 10 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 25 years old. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a slender, straight trunk covered in very thick, ridged, burgundy and brown bark, and inside, the soft wood is burgundy-brown.

The branches are very long and thin and are covered with small amounts of miniature, very narrow and elongated leaves with toothed edges. The leaves themselves are pink at the bottom and caramel with intense orange lines at the top.

In early spring, it produces thick bunches of large, orange blossoms with fan-like petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They detach easily and have a soft scent that smells like ashes.

In late summer it produces very large, pleated fruit. The crispy turquoise skin is peel-able and sour, and the soft white flesh is spicy and very dry. The blood red seeds are large and are scattered throughout the fruit.

The roots spread far and go deep underground, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with patches of undergrowth between them.
