Blueberry

This small shrub grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall and lives for decades, with the oldest known specimen being around 190 years old. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has several long and flexible, straight stems covered in paper-thin, smooth, yellow-brown bark, and the wood inside is brown.

The branches are very short and thin with hundreds of twigs that and are covered with copious amounts of large, fan-like, leaves with jagged edges. The leaves themselves are solid bold blue with blood red patches, hardy and crispy.

In mid-spring it produces bunches of giant, blue blossoms with 4 oblong shaped petals. They are sturdy and have a strong scent that smells like cheap aftershave.

In late winter small broad, flat fruits ripen. The leathery purple skin is thin and edible when cooked; it is bitter and spicy, and the crunchy black flesh is slightly savoury and very dry. The cream seeds are large and are bunched at the top of the fruit.
