This giant fruit tree grows up to 51 feet (15.5 meters) tall and lives for up to 35 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 48 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

The sparse patches of branches are very long and thin and are covered with copious amounts of giant, long, narrow leaves with irregular edges. The leaves themselves are generally orange.

In early spring, it produces copious amounts of giant, indigo blossoms with wide petals. They are sturdy and have a strong scent that smells like new books.

In early autumn it produces , asymmetrical fruit. The crispy vivid blue skin is tough and spicy and salty, and the soft amber flesh is spicy and savoury and very juicy. The green seed is tiny and sits at the top of the fruit.

The roots are long and grow straight down, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with patches of undergrowth between them.
