Blackwood

Shrub type: Coniferous (Stores water in its leaves)

This small shrub grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall and lives for around 42 years. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has many knobbly, straight stems covered in fine, smooth, black bark, and the wood inside is burgundy.

The branches are tall, rigid and upright with dozens of twigs that and are covered with small bunches of tiny, needle-like, leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are dark yellow and azure, tough and rough.

In early spring it produces many tiny, cream flowers with slender, pointed petals. They detach easily and have an overpowering scent that smells like a newborn baby.

It is suitable for creating flexible, durable textiles
It usually houses a colony of beneficial insects.
It is difficult to cut through.
