Indigo

This massive fruit tree grows up to 61 feet (18.6 meters) tall and lives for up to 15 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 29 years old. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has a slender, straight trunk covered in thick, knobbly, black with white speckled bark, and inside, the very hard wood is pale yellow.

The branches trail down towards the ground and are covered with thick bunches of small, very thick leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are either red or cream, with turquoise patches.

In early spring, it produces lots of large, indigo blossoms with many layers of petals with a tube-like floral cup. They are very delicate and have an intensely strong scent that smells like something putrid.

In mid-summer it produces tiny, oval fruit. The smooth lilac skin is thick and inedible, and the very soft brown flesh is extremely bitter and sticky. The olive seed is tiny and sits at the top of the fruit.

The roots are fine and grow in a large web, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with grassy ground between them.
