This brown moss is commonly found blanketing medium-sized areas On trees, and In rainy mountain ranges.
It is large, growing up to 7 inches (18 cm) tall. It forms in thick clumps, and is very frail; it dislikes being stepped on.
When mature, emerald teardrop-shaped capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the late summer to release hundred of spores; it can cause severe allergic reactions.

It is suitable for use as a construction material
The petals have medicinal properties
It blooms only at night.
