Blackfruit Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This short fruit tree grows up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and lives for up to 30 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 60 years old. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has a branched, angular trunk covered in thick, waxy, black with white speckled bark, and inside, the very hard wood is white with black speckles.

The branches are short, rigid and upright and are covered with thick bunches of huge, long, narrow leaves with wavy edges. The leaves themselves are aquamarine on the edges and gold at the center.

In early spring, it produces thick bunches of medium-sized, white blossoms with wide petals. They are hardy and have an intensely strong scent that smells like rotten eggs.

In mid-autumn it produces tiny, long, tapering fruit. The rough slate skin is peel-able and edible when roasted; it is sour, and the soft black flesh is sweet and sour and dry. The washed-out red seeds are large and are located in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are fine and grow in a large web, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with grassy ground between them.

It is suitable for making baskets and the like
