Bloodfruit Tree

This small fruit tree grows up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 30 years old. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a branched, straight trunk covered in hard, wrinkled, black with white speckled bark, and inside, the soft wood is dark brown.

The branches are short, rigid and upright and are covered with small amounts of large, perforated leaves with toothed edges. The leaves themselves are orange at the bottom and black with cyan dots at the top.

In early spring, it produces handfuls of medium-sized, lilac blossoms with cylindrical shaped petals. They are very delicate and have an intensely strong scent that smells like meat.

In mid-autumn it produces , broad, flat fruit. The soft slate skin is peel-able and inedible, and the slightly crunchy blood red flesh is bitter and sour and syrupy. The gentle green seed is large and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and grow straight down, and overall the tree is rigid and weak, and breaks apart easily.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.
