Indigo Vine
Flower type: Biennial (Grows upwards by clinging to almost any surface.)This average-sized flower grows up to 1.4 feet (43 cm) tall. Its pink-red stem is wispy and splits into 9 branching stems a quarter of the way up, and the small, gray leaves are 6 pointed with smooth edges. The leaves alternate on the stem from about halfway up, up to the flower head.
Dozens of small flowers grow in drooping bunches like grapes. The flowers are 3 cm (1.2 inches) wide, with indigo petals and a dark brown central disk. The flower head is made up of 11 petals; the lower layer of petals are flat, while the upper layers form a tight dish. They are hardy.
It has an overpowering scent that smells like an ocean breeze, and it has excessive amounts of pollen; it can can cause allergic reactions. It is a self-pollinator, but is also visited by a variety of insects.
It is often home to a particular bird species.
It can survive a very long time without water.
