It takes 5 months for the pink-red stems to mature, by which point they each have a diameter of 1 cm (0.4 inches) and are rough and prickly.
The long, tapering, clammy leaves reach up to 6 inches (15 cm) in length. They are pink and slate, and have smooth edges.
During late spring, the bine produces hundreds of average subtle purple flowers, and during the early winter, after flowering, it produces a few tiny berries.
It is suitable for making baskets and the like
The stems are covered in large spikes.
