Copperberry

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This small fruit tree grows up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and lives for up to 15 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 17 years old. It is very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a thick, straight trunk covered in paper-thin, waxy, silver and white bark, and inside, the flexible wood is copper-coloured.

The branches are very long and thin and are covered with large amounts of miniature, circular leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are either vivid purple, or blue with slate patches.

In early spring, it produces thick bunches of medium-sized, pink blossoms with spear shaped petals. They fall easily and have a delicate scent that smells like glue.

In early winter it produces small, pleated fruit. The smooth bright red skin is peel-able and sweet, and the crunchy blue flesh is extremely spicy and very dry. The vibrant green seed is large and sits at the top of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and widely spread, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with the space between filled with undergrowth.

The bark is frequently covered in moss.
