Copperberry

This large fruit tree grows up to 32 feet (9.8 meters) tall and lives for up to 10 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 26 years old. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a knobbly, wavy trunk covered in thin, knobbly, dark brown bark, and inside, the light wood is copper-coloured.

The branches are short stubs and are covered with small bunches of miniature, asymmetrical leaves with rounded edges. The leaves themselves are found in hazel, violet and cream varieties.

In early spring, it produces large amounts of small, pink blossoms with slender, pointed petals. They are hardy and have a delicate scent that smells like cotton.

In early summer it produces , T-shaped fruit. The rubbery brown skin is thick and edible when boiled; it is sweet and sour, and the very soft copper flesh is bitter and spicy and very juicy. The dark brown seeds are large and are bunched at the bottom of the fruit.

The roots are thick and spread across the surface, as well as underground, and overall the tree is sturdy, flexible, and difficult to uproot or break.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.
