Blueberry

This small fruit tree grows up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall and lives for up to 30 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 50 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a flexible, wavy trunk covered in wrinkled, pine-coloured bark, and inside, the soft wood is white with black speckles.

The numerous branches are very short and thin and are covered with small amounts of large, sickle shaped leaves with toothed edges. The leaves themselves are faded blue and sky blue.

In early spring, it produces hundreds of small, peach blossoms with fan-like petals. They are hardy and have a delicate scent that smells like cherry.

In mid-autumn it produces tiny, needle-like fruit. The hairy green skin is peel-able and edible when boiled; it is sweet, and the crunchy slate flesh is savoury and oily. The hazel seed is tiny and sits at the end of the fruit.

The roots are fine and grow in a large web, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with clear space between them.
