Copperberry

This short fruit tree grows up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 43 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has a sturdy, straight trunk covered in hard, cracked, copper-coloured bark, and inside, the flexible wood is brown.

The branches are short stubs and are covered with small amounts of small, very thin leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are found in pastel blue and red varieties.

In early spring, it produces dozens of medium-sized, gentle red blossoms with long, tapering petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They detach easily and have an overpowering scent that smells like blood.

In late summer it produces tiny, oval fruit. The rough black skin is tough and edible when roasted; it is slightly bitter, and the crunchy azure flesh is bitter and syrupy. The dark orange seed is very large and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and widely spread, and overall the tree is sturdy, flexible, and difficult to uproot or break.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with patches of undergrowth between them.
