This burgundy moss is commonly found blanketing small areas On trees.
It is average-sized, growing up to 3 inches (8 cm) tall. It forms in small clumps and they overwhelm an area rapidly, and is slightly frail; it burns easily in strong sunlight.
When mature, emerald V-shaped capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early autumn to release hundred of spores.
